Straughan Family | At Home Family Session in York

I shot Hannah & Ben's wedding nearly 4 years ago. There they are, happy as ever above! I was over the moon when Hannah got in touch for a family session at their home in York. Their second boy, Wilf, had just arrived and they were keen to have some photos soon after he was born. Newborn shoots are best done in the first two weeks if you really want to capture that brand new squishiness, as well as all the incredible expressions they make! But it doesn't really matter when you do the shoot; every stage is wonderful to document.

My approach to family sessions is a mixture of documentary and portrait - although nothing overly staged and with your baby cuddled in your arms; after all, as any parent knows, this is where a newborn is truly content and relaxed!

I find it incredibly rewarding when I meet up with my couples long after their wedding and am given the opportunity to document their continuing story and the new generations that have joined the family. If you're considering having a family shoot, do get in touch. I am certain you won't have any regrets. They grow up so fast (I know only too well) and I can only imagine how wonderful it will be to look back at these photos when they've grown, or even embarrass them on their wedding day! You can see more of my work on my Family Website HERE. Even if I didn't shoot your wedding, I would love to hear from you!

Anna, Gareth & Baby Lucas Theo

It was an absolute privilege to have photographed Anna & Gareth's wedding in Switzerland, their pregnancy and now their first days with baby Lucas. I wanted to include some of the shots I took of their maternity shoot. This whole series is in black and white as I think it works well; lending a true, timeless feel to the photographs.I didn't want to capture anything with a staged or posed feeling. I just wanted these photos to feel real and in the moment. I love this shot of Anna, Gareth & Lucas. Such a tender moment. There is nothing more precious than the first few days with your newborn! I remember it well!I just love the opposing expressions in the shot below!Anna's parents were staying with them so I captured a few portraits of the happy grandparents!I had never done a baby shoot before having a child of my own and I really think that being a mother myself, proved to be a great advantage when doing this shoot, as I don't think I would have known what to do with a baby before having Ava! It brought back lots of memories of my first days as a new mother. It's truly the most daunting, scary, wonderful, exhausting, emotional, and tremendous experience all in one. Having experienced this myself, has led to my interest in capturing this special time for other couples. It's particularly exciting when it also happens to be one of my wedding couples!

I am now offering pregnancy/maternity couples shoots, family, baby and newborn shoots. It's a new path for me but I am absolutely loving it and hope to bring my documentary style combined with timeless, and elegant portraiture, which I adopt with wedding photography, to these types of shoots as well. Although I have chosen full black and white for this blog post, of course I include colour shots as well! I was simply drawn to the feel of the black and white images for this post.

I have loved getting to know Anna & Gareth over the past 18 months and they are now good friends. I am so excited that they are on the journey of parenthood and wish them all the happiness in the world! Here's to a full night of sleep some time in the future. ;) xx
